Lindsey’s fashion photo session in Town Center.

She was visiting from Texas, wanted to reconnect, and get some new images done.

Lindsey and I have been friends since 2008 and we’ve done several sessions over the years. She moved to the Lone Star State a few years ago but we’ve remained in touch and we try to meet up whenever she visits. The stars aligned during her most recent one so we did our thing.

Since she was traveling light we were limited to what she could fit in her overnight bag. She is 100% a country girl so we decided to do a riff on that by shooting in Town Center. Sorta the “country girl in the big city” kinda thing.

Cassidy Burnett’s Virginia Beach fashion shoot.

Read on to learn about The Model Experience sessions.

Cassie was one of the models who walked the catwalk during the recent Town Center Fashion Show. You can see those images here. We started communicating via social media soon after. She’s just starting out her modeling career and I’m getting back into fashion photography so it made perfect sense to team up.

Jessica Magary is my first ever Woman Crush Wednesday.

She was the first professional model I worked with after moving to Virginia.

I honestly can’t remember exactly how I first met Jessica Magary (https://www.facebook.com/jessica.magary). I think it was on a group shoot where a bunch of photographers get together with a bunch of models and worked with everyone for a little bit. I’m not sure. But somehow we did meet up and we agreed to do a solo session together. I even remember the date and location – September 28th, 2011 at First Landing State Park.

Now, mind you I was new to the area. I was living in Williamsburg and teaching but really hadn’t gotten into the local scene yet. I was still refining my off-camera flash skills, didn’t know the Virginia Beach area at all, and was looking for someone to work with to get my skills down.

In walks Miss Jessica. Her and her mom were super nice and understanding. We talked about rescheduling the session as there was supposed to be a storm.

Jasmyne’s fashion session in Virginia Beach’s Town Center.

Preparation and planning are paramount to the success of a session.

Jasmyne and her team recently reached out to me in regards to getting her modeling career started. We had long discussions about what genres/areas she wanted to be involved with and what would be involved to get there. We then created a plan to build a photo portfolio showing off those aspects. Of course these things take time to create so we broke it down further to focus on just urban fashion in Town Center for our first session.

She sent me pictures of the outfits she thought would work for such a session and I gave my input. With a plan in place she then set up times with a hair stylist and make-up artist to polish off the total look we were going after. I can’t stress enough how important these things are as they are the icing on the proverbial cake. Every detail has to be in place.

Throwback Thursday for December 10.

Today we’re going sailing with the beautiful Jessica Magary.

Any time I get a chance to do something different I’ll jump. When the opportunity came up to do a photography class on a sailboat, I practically leaped out of my skin. Having the divine Jessica Magary come aboard was the proverbial icing on my cake.

So, after taking two different kinds of motion sickness pills and chowing down ginger snaps, we all climbed aboard and cast off. The class broke down into smaller groups and worked several different scenarios with me acting as a consultant. They were getting great images.

I had one image in my head that I wanted to try. So, after everyone had their fill, I ventured out to the prow of the boat and laid down. Jessica and fellow model Dameon Rhoades  got into position. Once everything was right, everyone not being used went below deck or ducked so they wouldn’t be in the background.

The result is what you see here. A special shout out goes to Donna DeSteph for allowing a bunch of land lubbers aboard her fine vessel.

Stay tuned as I’ll be posting a new set of images from a recent session tomorrow.

Just a quick note about the lack of new work this week.

I’m moving this weekend.

Sorry, I won’t have a whole new set to post today as I’m currently surrounded by bins and boxes waiting for the movers. After everything is done and the dust settles I’ll start posting new work again. Until then here’s a sneak peek from my recent session with Carrie Ellis in the back alleys of downtown Norfolk.

Mark Knopp is a Virginia Beach-based portrait photographer covering the Hampton Roads community. Contact him at mknopp1@cox.net to book your portrait session today.

Throwback Thursday images 10/29/15

Images from a beach sunrise session that hasn’t been published before.

Today’s Throwback Thursday image is from a series of images that I would consider some of my best work ever. They are part of a group that I’m most proud of as an artist. The combination of pose, light, composition, movement, et cetera, elevates them to a higher level. After I hang up my camera for good, when I look back at my overall career, these images will stand out as pinnacles of personal achievements.
