Anita’s baby bonding photo session with Lilyana.

It is one of the greatest honors and joys to photograph the relationship between a mother and her child.

Ok, this might throw some of you for a curve but I love photographing the relationship between a mother and her baby. There is something so Zen-like about it to me. The lighting is simple, the posing is all natural so no direction is needed. I just move around the pair and photograph those tender, special, sometimes funny, always satisfying moments they share as they strengthen their bond together.

Yes, there will be soiled diapers. Yes, there will be “woopsies” after a feeding. Doesn’t even phase me. I actually think the faces both make after one of those moments is priceless. It’s all about them and their relationship. The contact, the gazes, the snuggles. The fleeting moments captured and to be cherished forever.

There is something special that happens when a mother feeds her baby. They both share a moment of peace as the little one grabs a finger and catches mom’s eye. Bottle, breast, or a combination of both, feeding time is bonding time. These are moments to savor and moments to preserve.

Anita and her precious four month old allowed me the honor to photograph such moments. For a few moments the world of a new mom was put aside and it was just the two of them enjoying some quiet time.

This session just felt easy and natural thanks to Mark and the ease he brings to his sessions. These photographs are exactly what I feel in my soul when I tend to my babe… an indescribable, tender love. These images capture that tenderness and the softness of mother and baby bond so perfectly. These sweet moments are so fleeting, and it is so special to me to see them captured so beautifully. They will be treasured forever. – Anita

The Big Announcement.

Nothing ever stays the same.

Life’s always changing and we must keep up with them, lest we get left behind. As such, after much thought and reflection on several issues, I’ve decided that it’s time to move on.

On December 18th, I will be leaving Virginia and moving to Clearwater/Tampa, Florida. I think this is the best move for a variety of reasons – family, career, and myself.

As such, this is my last month here in Virginia Beach. If you ever thought about booking a session with me, nows the time to do it. Time is very limited. I plan to have all sessions wrapped up by December 4th so that I can have all edited images back to the clients and pack before the big move.

Von and Robert’s Nordic wedding at First Landing.

I couldn’t say yes fast enough.

I’ve been in the wedding business for about 30 years now. Done the big ones of over 300 guests. Done the small ones that had 12 people total in the whole event. Big churches and small cabins in the woods. Winter, spring, summer, and fall – I’ve done them all. Or so I thought. Von and Robert’s Nordic wedding ceremony was a first and it was an honor to be part of it.

They wanted a Nordic wedding because it went with their beliefs. We went over the details in the pre-wedding consultation so that I knew what was important to capture. I took lots of notes. The couple rented a cabin at First Landing State Park to prep and to hold the Reception. The ceremony was held beach-side.

I could write a book about the ins and outs of the event. For example, there was a High Priest and Priestess. Michael Greth, the Best Man, and current Drighten (Leader) of Eastern Beach Kindred, hallowed the space at the beginning, making it sacred. As Thor is the protector of Midgard, their realm, he did a Hammer Rite to make the area safe.

The couple took three oaths. The weapon oath was where they traded weapons as a way to pledge to protect their home. They also took the ring oath, and a personal oath. When it was over, the party returned to the cabin to celebrate.

This event dovetailed perfectly with my concept of Sincere Weddings which is what I love covering.

Leslie’s headshot photo session in downtown Norfolk.

She knows the importance of a professional headshot.

People often link headshots with movie stars and models. However, professional headshots are also commonly used for business marketing and social media platforms. It’s important to have a visual brand that presents you in the best light, with an up-to-date look.

Heck, even I bit the bullet recently and sat in front of someone else’s camera for my new headshot.

Leslie needed an updated headshot. She also knew that an image from a cellphone camera or a friend’s point and shoot just wouldn’t cut it. So she reached out to me to do a session in downtown Norfolk.

Why should you have a professional headshot done?

It gives your business a personal touch. People want to see a photo of the person with whom they’re doing business.

It enhances your biography page on your social media. Because your biography or “about” page usually gets the most web traffic, it’s critical that it includes a headshot. When people log on to a bio page, they want to connect a business with a face.

It’s useful for market and branding. Branding is much more than just a catchy logo or tagline. It’s also an emotional tie that you make with your customers. In other words, your face is your company brand.

Here are some pointers for you when planning your headshot session:

– Hire a professional makeup artist/hair stylist before the session. You might know how to do makeup/hair but a pro knows how to do it for a photo session.

– If you need to tweak your style, hire a professional stylist to go shopping with you to pick out a few outfits that would be flattering in a headshot.

– Select one or two looks to be photographed.

– Plan on 30-45 minutes for the session.

– Know what kind of look you are going for. Business? Casual? Artistic? In a studio? On location? Plan it out with the photographer before the day of the session.

– It’s never one and done. People change over time. They get older, lose weight, change hairstyles, get glasses/contacts, grow/shave beards, et cetera. Headshots should be done once a year or two years to keep up with the changes.

Hope Roach’s portrait session at First Landing.

The Norfolk-based model is looking to break into the commercial and editorial market.

It is always a joy to work with someone new to the world of modeling. To watch someone start out on their journey, figure out where they fit in the modeling spectrum, and work hard towards their dream is very inspiring. Hope is on such a journey and it was my honor to work with her during our recent portrait session.
