The Big Announcement.

Nothing ever stays the same.

Life’s always changing and we must keep up with them, lest we get left behind. As such, after much thought and reflection on several issues, I’ve decided that it’s time to move on.

On December 18th, I will be leaving Virginia and moving to Clearwater/Tampa, Florida. I think this is the best move for a variety of reasons – family, career, and myself.

As such, this is my last month here in Virginia Beach. If you ever thought about booking a session with me, nows the time to do it. Time is very limited. I plan to have all sessions wrapped up by December 4th so that I can have all edited images back to the clients and pack before the big move.

Mark Knopp is, for now, a Virginia Beach-based portrait photographer covering the Hampton roads community and beyond. Contact him today at mknopp1(at)cox.net to book your session while he’s still here.

Kristin Bauer is today’s #TBT

This central New York model was instrumental in making me who I am today as a portrait photographer.

There are those that, if they get to you early enough in your life, can mold and shape you into a better, stronger self. Kristin is one of those people. Because of her, i am what i am today in terms of who i am, how I work and my style.

We met up just as I decided to become a portrait photographer. I knew what I wanted to do and I had a good grasp of the photographic basics but I was terribly inexperienced when it came to working with people. In fact I had practically no experience in the matter whatsoever. I was the proverbial babe lost in the woods.

My first session with the stunning DeeAna Barilics.

Working with the Virginia Beach model and how my sessions typically go.

DeeAna and I recently teamed up to do a beach portrait session at First Landing in Virginia Beach. She is a local model figuratively getting her feet wet in the scene which means it’s only fitting that she get her feet wet literally with me. A beach session gave us several different “looks” that she could add to her portfolio.

People ask me why I like starting some time before sunset for these sessions. The answer is simple for a variety of reasons.

Jessica Magary’s recent beach portrait session at First Landing State Park, Virginia

This woman makes my All-Star list of people to work with and a truth about modeling.

Hands down. No second thought. No further consideration needed. Jessica is, by far, one of the best people I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. I’ve told her numerous times that she should be living and working in New York City.

Beauty is a given. Books could be written about her splendor. What makes her stand out, in my opinion is her work ethic and her attitude. She is always on time and is always prepared. She knows how to move and how to work the set. She is always open to suggestions on poses or can work her thing and let the photographer do theirs.

Brooke Ouderkirk’s portrait session at Fair Haven, New York.

It’s always good to have a “Plan A” but be ready for “Plan B and the Basic 5 outfits.”

I’ve worked with Brooke a few times now. Each time we get together we always get great images. It’s fun to watch her grow as a model and as a woman. This time we decided to work at Fair Haven State Park’s beach for a sunset session so we planned accordingly.

Now, I’m a firm believer in being prepared for anything. I think it’s one of the things that separates the pros from the amateurs. That goes not only for back up gear in case something stops working but also being ready for any situation that arises. For example, I always have my clients bring extra outfits that don’t necessarily work with the main idea but are good to have. I call them the Basic 5. They are:
