Welcoming Summer 2017 Sessions.

It’s time to head outdoors and create unique images that will be cherished for generations.

Yep, it’s time to take the show on the road. Time to hit local and regional locations to use as backdrops for your portrait session. While I love working inside, the great outdoors appeals to me in so many different ways. We use the power of different environments to add depth to a scene and to inspire us as we work.

Most importantly, we use it to awe the viewers when it’s all said and done.

So let me take a moment to remind everyone what I offer. I have extensive experience in the following: Continue reading

Jessica Magary is my first ever Woman Crush Wednesday.

She was the first professional model I worked with after moving to Virginia.

I honestly can’t remember exactly how I first met Jessica Magary (https://www.facebook.com/jessica.magary). I think it was on a group shoot where a bunch of photographers get together with a bunch of models and worked with everyone for a little bit. I’m not sure. But somehow we did meet up and we agreed to do a solo session together. I even remember the date and location – September 28th, 2011 at First Landing State Park.

Now, mind you I was new to the area. I was living in Williamsburg and teaching but really hadn’t gotten into the local scene yet. I was still refining my off-camera flash skills, didn’t know the Virginia Beach area at all, and was looking for someone to work with to get my skills down.

In walks Miss Jessica. Her and her mom were super nice and understanding. We talked about rescheduling the session as there was supposed to be a storm.

Brittany and Dalton’s engagement session at First Landing.

He literally went the extra mile to propose to her.

Britany and Dalton are a fun couple. They reached out to me to photograph their engagement photos but they warned me they were looking for something a little different. They had me at “different.”

I’ll let Britany explain:

I’ve loved to run since I was 14. It’s a part of my life. Dalton has always hated running and would never go with me. I attempted to get him to go with me at least once a week.

It’s that time of year.

Gearing up for another portrait season outside.

Things are finally warming up out there which means a return to outdoor sessions. Personally, I’m counting the days until I can return to the beach and other wonderful locations.

I’m also building a small studio set up at my place in case the weather won’t cooperate or a client wants studio portraits done. I’m posting an image from a test run I did here recently.

That being said here’s a reminder of just what kind of portrait sessions I offer. These can be done on location or at my place:

Yep, I’m still kicking. Here’s an update of what’s in the works.

I’ve just been busy with the other side of the business during the cold months.

Life is about balance. The ebb and flow. Doing the best you can with what you’ve got. Go with the flow. To this end I split my business between portraits and other endeavors. I do the portraits when the weather cooperates as they’re done outside on location. When the temps drop, I head inside to do other things.

I always keep an eye on the weather forecast, though. If I see a day or two that creep up above 65 I start lining up sessions outside so there will be some new images coming down the line, I promise.

Miss Carter’s recent Virginia Beach sunrise fitness photo session.

Summer’s wrapping up which means so will the beach sessions for another year.

When I took my dog Oscar out for a walk this morning, I noticed a slight drop in temperature. Not cold, mind you, but a noticeable drop. Granted, after weeks of 95 degree weather, a dip into the low 80’s always seems a bit chilly but still. A look at the calendar made me realize that there are not many days left in this summer.

Lexi’s portrait session at Lynnhaven House

A friendly face returns for another go-around

Lexi and I go back a few years. We’ve worked together a couple of times but then she graduated from college and moved out of state. It hurt to see her go but we remained in touch. I would occasional send her an annoying text bugging her on when she was going to come back and visit me. She would reply back with “someday soon” and then we’d catch up with each other’s lives.

Well, as it turns out, that someday soon was recently. She was in the area visiting the family before the holiday and wanted to get together for an outdoor session. I of course acted all kinds of cool and said “whatevs”. Yeah, right. I just about came out of my chair when I read her text and scared poor Oscar. A quick check of the calendar was done and a date set.
