Hope Roach’s portrait session at First Landing.

The Norfolk-based model is looking to break into the commercial and editorial market.

It is always a joy to work with someone new to the world of modeling. To watch someone start out on their journey, figure out where they fit in the modeling spectrum, and work hard towards their dream is very inspiring. Hope is on such a journey and it was my honor to work with her during our recent portrait session.

Erin’s Trash the Dress session at the Virginia Beach oceanfront.

The rebirth of Erin, in her own words.

I’m turning this over to her so she can tell you about our Trash the Dress photo session.

My name is Erin, I’m 32, and am going through a divorce. With that being said, the split has been very amicable and we still remain good friends. However, people don’t get divorced for no reason and I had some feelings about it. Our wedding was exactly what I wanted, and so was the DRESS. I hadn’t even gotten it all the way on at the bridal shop and knew it was the one. But life happens and here we are.

I had heard of the trash the dress concept years ago, and loved it but had honestly forgotten about it. That was until my best friend, who also just got divorced, sent me some pictures of other women’s experiences and I knew it had to happen. My mind went straight to Mark, who I’ve known for years. There was no one else for the job, and he didn’t hesitate when I asked. It was meant to be.

Lindsey’s fashion photo session in Town Center.

She was visiting from Texas, wanted to reconnect, and get some new images done.

Lindsey and I have been friends since 2008 and we’ve done several sessions over the years. She moved to the Lone Star State a few years ago but we’ve remained in touch and we try to meet up whenever she visits. The stars aligned during her most recent one so we did our thing.

Since she was traveling light we were limited to what she could fit in her overnight bag. She is 100% a country girl so we decided to do a riff on that by shooting in Town Center. Sorta the “country girl in the big city” kinda thing.

Images from Saturday night’s Town Center Fashion Show.

It was my first time photographing a runway show. It won’t be my last.

I recently got a heads up from Jessica Magary, a great friend and awesome runway model, that there was going to be a fashion show in Virginia Beach’s Town Center. As I’ve always wanted to see her in action but haven’t made it up to New York City to see her strut her stuff during Fashion Week, I figured this would be a great way to dip my toes into runway photography and see her in action.

The show, held in Town Center Fountain Plaza and hosted by Chelsie Hightower, featured fall fashions that can be found in Town Center shops. These included:

Monkee’s of Virginia Beach, Anthropologie, Destination Maternity, Francesca’s, Men’s Wearhouse, French Twist, Boyer’s Diamonds at Town Center, Bevello, Free People.

The models hair and make-up were done by Sumatra Salon and Spa. Blue Mercury supplied the make-up. Also included were five dogs done up with outfits from Mrs. Bones Boutique and the set was decorated with items that can be found at West Elm.

Leslie’s recent fashion session in downtown Norfolk.

My journey back into fashion photography continues.

Per Wikipedia:
Fashion: 1. a popular trend, especially in styles of dress and ornament or manners of behavior. synonyms: vogue, trend, craze, rage, mania, fad.
2. a manner of doing something.

There has always been a pull to shoot fashion. The entire topic fascinates me. It’s ever changing and evolving. I’ve studied it and the photographers that have done well with it. I grew up pouring over images from Penn, Ritts, Newton, Avedon, Meisel, and others.

I’ve always thought of fashion in the manner that it’s not what you wear but how you wear it. Jeans have been jeans for over a century. But they have changed over the years. Bell bottoms, boot cut, designer, cut/torn, acid wash, stone wash, skinny and, of late a trend back towards designer.

Eileen is my Throwback Thursday with a twist.

Also – there’s still plenty of nice days for beach portrait sessions left in the season.

Before I get into Eileen’s inspirational story I want to take a moment to point out that there’s still time to book a outdoor portrait session. As I write this, the forecast for the day is calling for highs in the upper 80’s with the next seven days in the lower 80’s. So, if you are thinking about a portrait session outside like at the beach, contact me today.

Ok, so a little backstory about this series. Eileen and I teamed up for a beach sunrise session back in the summer of 2014. She was, and still is, a fitness enthusiast and wanted images done to document her hard work and effort. We met up one morning and created what I thought were amazing images.

Tershia’s fashion session in Virginia Beach’s Town Center.

Picking up from where I left off and pushing further with this proof of concept session.

I’ve been doing this photography thing for a while. How long, you ask? Well, lets just say that I launched my business the same year Fox and Mulder started exploring their “X-Files.”

I’ve covered a lot of ground over the years. I’ve worked with color, black and white, and infra-red film before crossing over to the digital age. I’ve shot fashion, wedding, beauty (which was called glamour when I started), photojournalism, portrait, boudoir, landscape, sports, automotive, and much more. This is extended to every technique/fad like shallow depth of field portraits, cross-processing film/filters, editing image files, et cetera.
